Hey everyone,

Welcome to the new Tumblr for The Slow Readers Book Club. We’re excited to have you reading along with us!

Here are the picks!

Non-Fiction
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Rebecca Skloot

It is the untold story of the woman behind one of the most famous scientific discoveries — HeLa cells, the first “immortal cells” to grow in culture. We learn about the women who was Henrietta Lacks, her experience at the John Hopkins “colored ward” in the 1950s, her family and the huge effect her cells have had on our everyday life. Skloot takes us on a journey where she pieces together history, memory and science to build a legacy that transcends time and space. Intimate in feeling, astonishing in scope, and impossible to put down, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks captures the beauty and drama of scientific discovery, as well as its human consequences.

Fiction
The Virgin Suicides - Jeffrey Eugenides
A hauntingly beautiful tale, told through the eyes of the neighbourhood’s boys (now all grown up) who were fascinated by the 5 Lisbon sisters who mysteriously commit suicide over the course of a year. Obsession, lust and loss dominate this coming of age story set in the mundane reality of American suburbia in the 1970s. The boys trace through their memories and reminisce about the peculiar fates of The Virgin Suicides. Suicide, as a mortal sing, is a matter of intent. It’s very difficult to know what was really in those girls’ hearts.
